Life on the Edge
Poland’s EU-accession has pushed the Union’s border quite a long way to the East. While smuggling is an essential part of daily survival for the people along the border to the Ukraine and Byelorussia, with the Nordic neighbours, international cooperation is developing. Trust is growing only slowly between the new-old neighbours both to the south-east and in the Baltic area. Despite all the old rivalries between the Nordic countries of the Baltic, not only is a lively free trade area thriving, but perhaps also a burgeoning new cultural and regional identity. Within society, too, the borders between the traditional and the modern and between the generations are being redrawn. This, in turn, is having an influence on society’s understanding of culture. Now a group of artist has visited the border areas to see for themselves.
