Ensemble Modern at the “Warsaw Autumn” Festival

[ Guest performance of Ensemble Modern at the International Festival of Contemporary Music “Warsaw Autumn” ]
“Landschaft mit entfernten Verwandten” (“Landscape with Distant Relatives”)

Ensemble Modern of Frankfurt on the Main will perform Heiner Goebbels’ opera “Landschaft mit entfernten Verwandten” (“Landscape with Distant Relatives”) on the big stage of Warsaw’s Teatr Narodowy. The impressive production breaks the usual separation between orchestra, chorus and stage performers: musicians turn into dancers, actors into drummers, and choristers recite texts. Musically the opera moves between avant-garde sounds, ethnic music and even hillbilly songs.

“Landscape with Distant Relatives” is a co-production of Ensemble Modern, funded by Deutsche Bank Stiftung and Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation), Grand Théâtre de Genève, Berliner Festspiele, Festspielhaus St. Pölten, La Filature-Scène Nationale de Mulhouse. It premiered at the Grand Théâtre de Genève in 2002, and will be presented as part of “Warsaw Autumn”, the renowned festival of contemporary music.

“Warsaw Autumn” owes its origins to the political thaw of 1956 and thus looks back on a tradition extending to the times of the Iron Curtain. Important performances of New Music do not exhaust what can be heard or seen at “Warsaw Autumn”: under its present artistic director, Tadeusz Wielecki, the festival is also open to other art forms.

This guest performance is made possible by Büro Kopernikus in cooperation with Deutscher Musikrat and the Gesellschaft zur Verwertung von Leistungsschutzrechten (GVL).
