[Edith Ruß Site for Media Art, Oldenburg]
The Edith Ruß Site for Media Art originates from an endowment by Edith Ruß, an Oldenburg secondary school teacher. Ruß bequeathed her estate to the city on the condition that it create a venue “for art in transition to the new millennium.” With its focus on new media art the Edith Ruß Site is something special in Northern Germany. In a regularly changing exhibition programme it shows innovative and experimental positions in contemporary art. Presentations, artist talks, a stipend programme, and educational workshops in media or media art advance public discourse on media art and promote numerous regional and supra-regional cooperations.

Künstlerhaus Stuttgart

[Artists’ House, Stuttgart]
The non-profit association Künstlerhaus Stuttgart Reuchlinstraße e.V. was founded in 1978 on the initiative of visual artists. The house is a Stuttgart institution that has gained international renown through its individual disposition as a place of production for artists and as a platform for art-theoretical discourse. But it has also become an indispensable place of exchange for the local art scene. Its success rests on its independent yet cooperating divisions—artistic direction, free projects, and workshops. The workshops can be used by all house members.

Motorenhalle – Project Centre for Contemporary Art, Dresden

Motorenhalle Project Centre, a former factory hall, is a venue for experimentation in artistic work relating to the community. The focus is on projects with artists that are not yet established, which are often realised by guest curators. Accompanying programmes illuminate the respective political, social, cultural, or scholarly contexts of the projects and the persons involved. The project centre has special relations to informal art groups in the Central and Eastern European countries. While project periods are flexible, regular series of talks or events hold a firm place in the project centre. Documentation of the projects and its publication on the Web are carried out step by step. An artistic advisory committee supervises the work of the project centre.

Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster

[Westphalian Art Association, Münster]
With about 1,000 members the Westfälische Kunstverein is one of the largest, and with its foundation in 1831 one of the oldest art associations. It grew out of a private initiative of citizens who aimed at preserving and collecting art that was then being threatened by secularisation. Already at the turn of the century, but more decidedly after the Second World War, the emphasis has shifted to contemporary art. Here the Kunstverein occupies an essential juncture between the production of art and its discussion. On the one hand the exhibitions of international contemporary art show what artists are grappling with today, on the other they give visitors the opportunity to understand and also to assess the significance of this art in society.
